health issues

The past few days have been difficult and draining emotionally. In the hospital Noah was diagnosed with a floppy right vocal cord and mild lyringiomylacia which is basically a name for cartilage that hasn't fully hardened yet around the larynx (voice box). It causes his breathing to sound noisy and his rib cage to cave in with each breath especially when nursing and when upset. This doesn't have any affect on his ability to maintain oxygen and he seems comfortable most of the time. It's something he should grow out of eventually. However, Noah hasn't been gaining weight like he should. His birth weight was 8# 11 oz. At his first pediatrician visit it was down to 8# which isn't uncommon. Then at 10 days old he was down to 7# 14 oz (which shouldn't happen) despite nursing well and having plenty of wet/poopy diapers. A few days later he was back up to 8#1oz which was 5 days ago. Yesterday when weighing him at the breastfeeding support group he didn't gain any weight. I brought him into his pediatrician who was also a little concerned. Her concern is that Noah is working to breath so that he's burning off too many calories. She decided that we'd re-weigh him later this week and if he's still not gaining he may have to be admitted to the hospital for tube feedings (something that would most likely have to continue at home for a while). We are praying that he starts to gain and keep some weight on so that doesn't have to happen!
I was able to get him a work in appointment with the ear nose and throat specialist today to follow up from the hospital due to his inability to gain weight. They did a scope up his nose and down his throat again to check on things. What they found was that his condition hasn't changed but the medicine Noah has been on for reflux hasn't been helping and I guess reflux goes hand in hand with the condition he has and each can make the other worse. Long story short we are stopping the Zantac and starting a different medication (Prevacid). I don't like the idea of him being on a medication but it's necessary at this point. After this appointment I brought him back over to the pediatrician office to re-weigh him since we were in the area. He gained 2 oz! Praise God! The plan is to bring him back in 2 days to recheck things and hopefully he'll continue to gain. The specialist said that kids with this condition tend to gain weight very slowly in the first year.
My milk supply also seems to be suffering some because he's not eating as much. Noah sleeps so much and it's very hard at times to keep him awake long enough to finish nursing. We've also done bottle feedings with the same result. I've also been sick with another sinus infection which certainly doesn't help!
The hardest thing at this point for me is feeling out of control. I was feeling pretty discouraged and depressed yesterday and most of today. Seeing that he gained weight definitely helped lift my spirits though. It's imperative that I remember that God is fully in control and is beside us every step of the way. This brings me comfort in many ways but is also something that is difficult for me given my personality. We are praying for healing in many ways around here and are hoping that things continue to improve.
